Doing Business on the Internet

Communicate by E-Mail

For many business, just having e-mail is an asset. Of course, you need a way to tell people about the e-mail address of your business for it to be of any use. Businesses also use e-mail to reach customers or potential customers. A tactic which is becoming increasingly common is sending unsolicited bulk e-mail, otherwise known as Spam.

Build a Web Site

More business establish an online presence every day. Often this just consists of a single web page that says "Hey here we are!". A web site should be well thought out and easy to navigate. You want to make it easy for people to find what you want them to find. Once you establish your site, you wan't to make sure people can find it. So be sure to register with a number of directory services and spiders. I've compiled a list of marketing ideas to help a business get the word out about their site.

Advertising

Increasingly, the way to make money on the Internet is to sell advertising. There are still many ways to advertise for free - including programs of reciprocal links, but selling space on your web page to advertisers is a concept that is catching on quickly. The better your site and the more traffic it gets, the easier it is to sell your space.

Secure Transactions

Even with so called "secure transactions", you use caution when providing credit card or other financial information over the Internet. Eventually there will be a secure and easy way to purchase items on the Internet, but the technology isn't quite there yet. Some companies allow you to submit your order then they call you for the credit card number or you fax the credit card information after placing your order on line.

Charging for Access

The Internet has long been a place geared to the free exchange of ideas. Increasingly companies are creating web sites which require a special password to enter. Some companies provide you a password for free and others charge. The ones that provide a free password are just getting the technology in place to eventually charge.
